Research group:

Fully funded PhD positions are available for EU citizens in the cold atoms groups at the University of Nottingham, UK.

We are seeking highly motivated physicists for experimental work on matterwave interferometry and quantum optical experiments. The technology for these projects is based on so-called atomchips, i.e. microfabricated devices that allow for magnetic trapping of ultra-cold atoms. The research projects range from the design, manufacture, and testing of new atomchip technology to building an atomic Sagnac interferometer for rotation sensing. Very high sensitivity to rotation can be achieved by bringing atoms into spatial superpositions and guiding them around a magnetic ring while preserving quantum mechanical coherence. We produce counter-rotating states with state-dependent trapping potentials that control the atomic motion. This allows us to operate the interferometer like an atomic clock and measuring the tiny proper time difference as experienced by atoms that are moving with or against a rotation of the laboratory.

Apart from offering very versatile laboratory experience, these projects will provide exciting opportunities for international scientific and industrial collaborations. The projects also provide links to the UK Quantum Technology Hub on Sensors and Metrology.

Candidates should have a strong background in physics, good experimental skills, a strong academic record, commitment and motivation. A master or diploma thesis or prior research experience are desirable. Admission will require at least a 2.1 honours degree (or equivalent result from a university in another country) and a recognised certificate of English Language Competency.
