We are seeking to appoint a Research Associate to work on the newly established Samsung-Imperial project “Quantum Simulation for New Quantum Materials”.
- Job Summary
• Job title: Research Associate
• Contract type: Full time, fixed term (24 months)
• Salary: £40,215 – £47,579 plus benefits
• Closing date: 17 February 2020
• Reference: NAT00632 http://www.imperial.ac.uk/jobs/description/NAT00632/research-associate-q...
- Duties and responsibilities
Many of the unsolved problems in materials science are directly related to the limitations of classical computers. Our lack of understanding of strongly-correlated quantum phenomena such as high-temperature superconductivity, rare-earth magnetism, and molecular excitations has been a major obstacle to new technological applications.
- The main task of the successful candidate is to use noisy-intermediate-scale hardware of quantum computers to tackle real-world problems in materials science. The duties will include identifying concrete problems, developing new algorithms and implementation schemes for quantum simulations. The successful candidate will have direct access to the state-of-the-art IBM Q quantum computer. In this interdisciplinary project, you will work in a dedicated team of postdocs and PhD students led by Professor Myungshik Kim, Professor Peter Haynes and Dr Johannes Knolle.
- Essential requirements
You must hold a PhD (or equivalent) in Theory of Quantum Many-Body Systems, Quantum Chemistry, Simulation of Quantum Materials, Electronic Structure Calculations or Quantum Information and Quantum Algorithms
- You must also meet the following essential criteria
* Commensurate with experience, a strong record of research delivery and publications in at least one of the above areas, as well as a strong interest and the ability to learn about the others.
* Proven expertise in programming and numerical methods for quantum many-body systems, quantum chemistry or quantum information.
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
* Existing experience with quantum simulation is highly beneficial.
- Further information
* Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £35,477 - £38,566 per annum.
* More information about the Department of Physics, and the staff benefits that we offer can be found on our webpages.
* The Department of Physics is an IoP JUNO Champion and an Athena Silver SWAN Award winner reflecting our commitment to building a supportive, inclusive and highly motivated community.
