Guided by the desire to help France win the Napoleonic Wars, Sadi Carnot gave birth to Thermodynamics. Although primarily focused on the efficiency of heat engines, such theory had developed into one of the principal pillars of modern physics. Even with the advent of relativity and quantum mechanics, the macroscopic laws of thermodynamics remained unchanged.
Despite the fact that it is an old theory, thermodynamics is far from being a closed subject. Recently, we have witnessed the impressive increase in the research discussing the fundamentals of this theory, specially concerning small systems as well as dynamics far from equilibrium.
The application of informational theoretic tools to the field had contribute a lot in order to increase our understand of the very basis of the theory, leading us to the extension of its laws to the quantum domain. How the macroscopic laws of thermodynamics emerge from the reversible quantum (and classical) dynamics? How to understand the thermalisation of a closed quantum systems? What are the relations between information, thermodynamics and quantum mechanics? How to investigate experimentally the thermodynamical behaviour of small quantum systems?
The purpose of this workshop is to gather together several researchers to explore such questions, from the theoretical and experimental point of views.
