Job Description:
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Louisiana State University (LSU) invites applications for its Hearne Research Chair in Theoretical Physics. The successful candidate must qualify for a tenured professorship, have an exceptional record of research accomplishment and will be expected to teach and establish an innovative and dynamic research program. The Hearne Chair has an endowment of approximately $1M, the annual interests of which the Chair holder has discretion over.
The Department consist of faculty working in a broad range of disciplines, including theoretical and observational astrophysics, space physics, particle astrophysics, neutrino physics, atomic, molecular and optical physics, quantum information science, condensed matter physics, materials science, theoretical and experimental high energy physics and nuclear physics, theoretical general relativity, experimental gravitational wave detection, and medical physics.
The Department of Physics and Astronomy is one of LSU’s premier research departments with 53 faculty members, 24 postdoctoral researchers, 100 graduate students, and 31 staff. Grants and contracts support totals more than $6.2 million per year. Major research facilities available to faculty include a 1.5 GeV synchrotron light source at LSU’s Center for Advanced Microstructures and Devices (CAMD), the NSF’s Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) located in Livingston Parish less than 30 minutes from LSU and the Center for Computation and Technology (CCT), an interdisciplinary research center with excellent supercomputing facilities. Required Qualifications: Ph.D. in physics or a closely related field with five years of successful service as an associate professor; strong international reputation; demonstrated excellence in teaching, research and extensive publication record.
