The School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences at Macquarie University (MQ) in Sydney Australia is making a substantial investment to grow its research capacity in quantum science and seeks to appoint an outstanding candidate to a continuing position as Lecturer (level B) or Senior Lecturer (level C).
The successful appointee will be employed under the 'Teaching and Research Academic job family - a balanced academic role which combines elements of research, teaching, leadership and service'.
The appointee will be expected to conduct world-class independent and collaborative research in Theoretical Quantum Physics with a preference that this research is in Quantum Computing, Quantum Algorithms, Quantum Technologies and Platforms, or other areas in Quantum Information Science. Exceptional academics in other areas of Quantum Physics are also encouraged to apply. Collaborative work with experimental programs and/or industry partners would be highly valued.
About Us
The newly merged School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences represents a continuation of the traditions of the disciplines of Applied Mathematics, Astronomy, Physics, Pure Mathematics and Statistics at Macquarie University. This position is part of our strategic growth in the area of Quantum.
Macquarie university hosts within the Faculty of Science & Engineering the MQ Centre for Quantum Engineering consisting of nine core research teams working on topics spanning quantum algorithms and computation, quantum simulation, resource theory, quantum sensing, quantum photonics, and relativistic quantum information. Experimental quantum research is conducted within the Quantum Materials and Applications (QMAPP) Group with laboratories on MQ Campus and at the CSIRO Lindfield site within the Materials Science Division.
Macquarie is a node in the ARC Centre for Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems (EQUS) which facilitates research collaboration with the four other national nodes and provides access to world-class quantum laboratories.
Since 2017, Macquarie has run a Masters by Research (MRES) degree program including a one year coursework stream focused on quantum engineering and Macquarie is one of four nodes within the Sydney Quantum Academy, a NSW government supported initiative which provides critical training and ecosystem development for the broader quantum sector.
Macquarie maintains multi-year funded quantum research partnerships with industry and defence. Access to high performance computing facilities is provided through Macquarie’s investment in the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI) partner scheme. This provides access to the Gadi national supercomputer (4,000+ nodes, 155,000 CPU cores, 567 Terabytes of memory and 640 GPUs) and Nirin cloud platform, supporting various environments and workflows. Additional compute and data services are available on Amazon Web Services (AWS) via the RONIN interface.

Essential selection criteria
- A relevant doctoral degree in theoretical physics or substantial equivalent academic experience/accreditation and standing
- A demonstrated record of an ongoing original research program in quantum computing, quantum algorithms, or other areas in quantum information science and quantum physics in leading international journals
- Capacity and/or demonstrated ability to attract research funding
- Capacity and/or demonstrated ability to perform high quality teaching at university undergraduate level
- Capacity and/or demonstrated ability to attract and to successfully supervise research students
- Demonstrated ability to communicate and interact effectively with students, staff, and the community
- Willingness to make a substantial contribution to all activities of the School, including in service and leadership
- Additional selection criteria for appointment at Senior Lecturer (Level C)
- A substantial record of publication of innovative and impactful research results
- A demonstrated record of success in attracting competitive research funding
- A demonstrated record of excellence and innovation in teaching
- A demonstrated record of attraction and/or successful supervision of research students
Salary Package: (Lecturer (Level B) Up to AUD160k including (AUD115,787 to AUD136,995 p.a. commensurate with experience and 17% employer's superannuation).
Salary Package: (Senior Lecturer (Level C) Up to AUD190k including (AUD141,376 to AUD162,584 p.a. commensurate with experience and 17% employer's superannuation).
