The group of Michael Kastoryano (mkastoryano.com) at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Cologne invites applications for both PhD and Postdoctoral positions starting as soon as possible. The salary is based on the German TV-L E13 pay scale. Appointments will be for two years at 100% E13 for postdoctoral researchers and at 66% for three years for doctoral candidates.

The successful candidates will work on interdisciplinary projects within the fields of quantum error correction, many body theory, quantum statistical mechanics, dissipative engineering and mathematical physics. Candidates with an interest in holography, tensor networks and machine learning methods for many body physics are particularly encouraged to apply. The group will be a part of the institute for theoretical physics (http://www.thp.uni-koeln.de/) which already has a very strong activity at the interface between condensed matter theory and quantum information, including the groups of D. Gross, S. Diehl, S. Trebst, A. Rosch and A. Altland. Close collaboration with the other theory groups is expected. While part of the physics institute, we welcome applications from researchers with a background in math or engineering. We value creativity, mathematical rigor, and openness to interdisciplinary collaborations.

The University of Cologne is an equal opportunities employer. Applications of women are thus espe- cially encouraged; applications of disabled persons will be given preferential treatment to those of other candidates with equal qualifications.

Candidates should send a CV including a short statement of research interests to [email protected]. Please include electronic contact details of two referees. Deadline is January 1, 2018. Later applications will be considered in case not all positions have been filled.
