A Post Doc. position in theoretical quantum optics is available at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark. The position is for research into one of the following two areas:

1) Engineering single photon non-linearities with atomic ensembles. Photons are normally weakly interaction with each other. The construction of single photon non-linearities where single photons interact strongly with each other is an outstanding challenge in quantum optics [1,2]. Here we will explore the possibility of constructing and applying single photon non-linearities either using Rydberg interactions in atomic ensembles or atoms weakly coupled to waveguides.

2) Suppressing the decoherence of quantum dots with tailored nanostructures. The dephasing of the optical transitions of self assembled quantum dots is a major obstacle to quantum dot research. Here we will explore methods for suppressing this decoherence by engineering nanostructures around the quantum dot which reduces the phonon fluctuation at the position of the dot.

The project will be partially funded by a new ERC starting grant for research in Quantum interfaces and Open Systems. The position will thus be part of a flourishing research environment. The research of the group focuses on the implementation of quantum information processing in a wide range of systems, ranging from quantum optical systems such as atoms and photons to solid state systems. The research especially focuses on coherent interfaces between light and matter. In addition we have a smaller program on ultra cold atoms. The applicant should have a Ph.D. degree in physics or a related subject, preferable with experience in quantum optics. Ideally the candidate should have experience with theories related to the projects.
