Overview
The Quantum Information and Computation group at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Innsbruck is looking for a Postdoc to start working on a new ambitious and exciting project. The multidisciplinary scope of this research brings together ideas from artificial intelligence, measurement-based quantum computation and theoretical quantum optics. The ideal candidate has proven expertise in at least two of these fields, and is familiar with numerical simulations and analytics in quantum theory.
Who we are
We are an international group at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Innsbruck, an equal opportunity institution. Our lines of research cover artificial intelligence, classical and quantum machine learning and their interplay with quantum technologies. For this project, we aim to develop a novel approach to intelligent agents that leverages features of quantum mechanics. We are looking for a motivated Postdoc to take on this challenge, who is willing to strongly engage into this project and strengthen some of the above areas. The work is consolidated by strong collaborations with European groups leaders in theoretical and experimental quantum information.
Further information on our works and research interests can be found in:

Who we are looking for
Candidates must hold a PhD or an internationally-recognized PhD degree (or have their PhD defense scheduled within 2020) in theoretical quantum information, with expertise in artificial intelligence, quantum machine learning, MBQC/graph states. Strong expertise in numerical simulations (C++, Python, Mathematica etc.) and/or analytical calculations in quantum information is expected. Familiarity with continuous-variables quantum information and quantum optics is a plus. The candidate should feel comfortable and stimulated to work in an international, collaborative group where excellent teamwork and English fluency are essential skills.
The fully funded Postdoc position is for 18 months, starting on January 1, 2021. Possibility for an extension might arise. The successful candidate will work with Dr. Fulvio Flamini and Prof. Hans J. Briegel, who coordinate the project, and the other group members. Involvement in other research projects, besides the object of this call, will be encouraged.
Application procedure
Applicants can submit their applications via email to [email protected] including the following documents (.pdf):
- Curriculum Vitae
- List of publications
- Contact information of two referees
- Motivation letter (including a short summary about the experience of the applicant, previous works and future research interests related to our group)
The deadline is October 26, 2020, but applications will be considered as they are received.
The starting date for the position is January 1, 2021.
