Postdoc or staff scientist in the Light-Matter Interactions Unit, OIST, Japan

Job type:

Application deadline:

Saturday, September 15, 2018

The Light-Matter Interactions Unit (https://groups.oist.jp/light) at OIST Graduate University invites applications for a postdoctoral position in any of their research areas (optical trapping, whispering gallery resonators for sensing/nonlinear optics/optomechanics, optical nanofibres, cold atom physics). The position is for a start later this year (2018) and the duration is dependent on the candidate’s background. For those with significant experience post PhD, the appointment may be at staff scientist level (fixed duration). Essential qualifications are a PhD in Physics with an excellent publication record, and fluency in written/spoken English. The successful candidate should also have proven ability to think independently, conduct novel research, and work within a team.

Ideally, we'd like to recruit an experimentalist, but we are also open to the right theoretician joining the group if he/she would be able to support several of our projects. We are open to hiring someone who’d be interested in doing a sabbatical here at a “postdoc” level of appointment.

OIST is a relatively new graduate university located on the main island of Okinawa. Our research spans a number of areas, but our particular interests are exploiting the properties of structured or confined light to manipulate small particles. Our research group is very well-funded, we’ve recently acquired new lab space, and we are a very international team currently represented by 17 different nationalities. English is the language used for all official business at OIST.

Commencement date and conditions: Autumn 2018. The position is for 1-2 years initially with further extension upon satisfactory progress. We offer a competitive salary, relocation & benefits package, including health insurance.

Submission documents (in English):

(i) a cover letter where you introduce yourself, your past research achievements and your future research goals

(ii) a full CV including undergraduate and postgraduate details and transcripts.

(iii) names of at least 3 academic referees

Please send your application to [email protected].

Deadline: We will continue to advertise until a suitable candidate is found.

OIST is a young and growing university, located on a beautiful and peaceful subtropical island in the far south of Japan. English is the working language. We are an equal opportunity, affirmative action educator and employer, committed to increasing the diversity of our faculty, students and staff.
