We seek a Postdoctoral Associate in Physics to lead a new startup project in the NYU’s Center for Quantum Phenomenon. The individual will lead the technology development and commercialization for a new quantum memory device originally developed in a Navy Research Lab. The goal of the project is to design a commercial version of the memory device that can store the states in a quantum computing circuit during the computation process. Another goal is to spinoff the commercial technology in a startup that continues to develop and fabricate the technology with commercially available semiconductor equipment and based on small business funding.
The project is funded by the MD5 Launch Program, a new startup acceleration program that has been established at NYU. The Program seeks to create startups that will commercialize intellectual property originating at government research labs and, through entrepreneurial methods, will realize end solutions. The MD5 Launch program funds an NYU-based research team for one year to further develop the commercial viability of the technology and pursue the plan to launch a startup venture based on the technology.
Responsibilities
The individual will work closely with Dr. Javad Shabani (scientific advisor) and Dr. Frank Vallese (business mentor) at NYU to accomplish the following tasks:
• grow InAs heterostructure with Al and/or Nb thin films;
• establish characteristics of Josephson junctions based on InAs and ITO
• fabricate scalable Josephson circuits
• develop a startup strategy with market area, product strategy and prospective customer-types.
Qualifications
• Education: PhD in Experimental Physics with a background related to nano- / micro-fabrication, condensed matter and quantum physics;
• Experience with fabrication of devices required;
• Experience with UHV instruments (preferred but not required)
• Interest in commercialization of technology;
• Interest in entrepreneurial ventures;
• Excellent communication skills;
• Excellent organizational and project management skills;
• Self-motivated to work independently with attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines;
